Welcome to the PROACTION Laboratory (Jorge Almeida's Lab)
Welcome to the Perception and Recognition of Objects and Actions Laboratory! We are located at Faculty of Psychology and Educational Sciences, University of Coimbra, Portugal.
Currently we have two main areas of research:
- Low-level visual pathways and manipulable object recognition - we are trying to understand how low-level cortical and subcortical pathways are involved in the way we recognize tools.
- Neuroplasticity in special populations - we have been developing a series of neuroimaging and behavioral studies with congenitally deaf individuals to study the processes of crossmodal plasticity.
Our laboratory uses a multimethod approach to address these research questions. We have been using Visual Psychophysics (fast presentation monitors and custom made fast PIO button boxes), and fMRI (SIEMENS Trio Tim 3T MRI Scanner). We will also start using Eyetracking (tobii), Motion Tracking (Optotrak), and TMS (Magstim and Stereotactic Image Guided TMS equipment).
If you are interested in these projects please visit our Projects' section and/or send us an email.
We have open positions at all levels:
Postdoctoral positions - we are looking for 3 postdoctoral fellows. Each fellow will be dedicated to a different technique: TMS, fMRI and Visual Psychophysics (see the links for each position). Funding from the Portuguese Science Foundation (FCT) is available, and the call for Marie Curie Fellowships is now open.
PhD studentships - we are looking for potential doctoral students interested in the processes of object recognition and the organization of conceptual knowledge. Please see the call leaflet for further information. Funding from the Portuguese foundation for Science is available.
Research assistants are welcome to apply. We are looking for young energetic and enthusiastic researchers Programming in Matlab is a plus. Please see our Informational leaflet (in Portuguese).
